Marcelo and Marcos Skewered!

I'm sure some of you think it's just not fair that we get to skewer some poor unsuspecting (sometimes suspecting) soul, and no one skewers us in return. Not so, when my daughter Grace came to Sketchclub, she skewered both Marcos and I!

If Refrigerators Could Walk

One of the things I noted, upon seeing Marco's posted sketch, both of us picked on this fellow's unique walk. I wouldn't say it was determined, as much as undeterred. This guy walked like what I would imagine a refrigerator would walk like: solid, confident, and unyielding.

Grace Vignali Posts!

Ladies and gentlemen, this past session Sketch Club had the distinct honor of a very special guest ... Grace Vignali. If the last name sounds familiar, it should ... she's my nine year old daughter. So, without further ado, here is her first posting!

-Good session today at Daphne's, including the presence of an unexpected artist at the table, that Marcelo will later introduce.
-And in the way back, quite a character, walking and talking with equal energy, and possibly going somewhere to deal with an important issue, at least that's what I thought (and again, who could argue the point anyway?).

not to much to say other than our spot of the day. his big old wolverine sideburns attracted us.

So that's It ! Sketchclub goes experimental !
Anyway, as I didn't go to Daphne's with the guys yesterday, Marcelo gave me a verbal description of the "mark of the day"...the memory sketch subject.
I drew it as I pictured it and this is the result...Let's see (I'm so nervous already!)

Going To The Movies ...

When the Sketchclub executives made their mark, this kid sensed it right way. Or, it could have been the fact that all three of us had our noses pressedd up against the glass as we looked him over from top to bottom. Yeah, that was probably it.

A little while ago, someone asked why so much Photoshop? As opposed to what? You mean there's another way to do art? Hmmm, we must look into this. "Figby, make a note of this, and fax the other executives. We need a meeting right away."

Currently, I just got set up with a Cintiq here at work, so it's almost like a traditional set up. As a matter of fact, this is the first drawing I produced entirely on the Cintiq ... from drawing to color.

--Marcelo

PS, Stephen's out sick, so welcome him back when he starts posting again.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are pleased to announce the expansion of the Sketchclub franchise! In keeping with Sketchclub rules, Mark McDonnell, Kelsey Mann, Patrick Morgan and David Colman have started their own independently owned and operated franchise!

If the names seem familiar, both Patrick Morgan and David Colman have made guest contributions on our very own Sketchclub. Now they have their very own blog! Please welcome SKETCHCLUB EAST: http://sketchclubeast.blogspot.com

Her variegated clothing and determined walk are probably what made us pick our mark.

As we walked trying to find someone, we noticed a cop pulling someone over, he was to be our mark. But as we turned the corner. Wham!!! This lady hit us, and thus a new memory sketch was born.

Lovely Blonde Hair ...

Hmm, I've gotta hunch her blonde hair isn't natural. Whaddya think?

--Marcelo

Two characters to-day !
(Just don't get used to it...)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone !
-Marcos.

We had a hard time finding a mark until we came across this guy. He must have been wondering why we were watching him...

Noelle

ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME? That's what this guy must have been thinking.

Let me digress, yes ... the executives at Sketchclub have been slacking. This was actually last week's mark, but we've all been so busy that none of us finished our memory sketch ... hence the black and white values instead of color. But, to get the full effect, imagine this guy walking towards me without moving his arms, gliding up and down with each stride of his steps, with his hair flapping out from under the visor like a seagull's wings. Yep, that was him. And all the while he was eyeballing me with that look on his face, "Are you lookin' at me?"

Morgan

On this day sketchclub had a guest artist come join me for lunch at daphnes. Patrick Morgan is a friend of mine from nickelodeon that used to go sketching with me evry week on our lunch breaks. Once we left daphnes. we spotted this guy. He looked very perplexed to me as he was getting a ticket from the movie machine. It is always fun to see what each artist remembers and how we interpret the subject.

The clouds may not be absolutely accurate, but what can I say, one can not pay attention to everything at a time...
-Marcos.

The Sketchclub "marks" are usually selected by their unique atributes ... suffice it to say Marcos and I knew instinctively this was our "mark."

Here's my memory sketch for today.

This guy was like a human polar bear. We caught him at the crosswalk as he lumbered along.

--Marcelo

when you see someone like this cross your path. there is only one option. And that is of course to run back to your desk and draw him.

Joe suggested a few days ago that we did a sketch of the group while we make sparks come out of our pencils at lunchtime. So after the drawing had been sitting around the office for a few days now, Marcelo just reminded me of it so ...here it goes (I see it and I feel hungry already)
-Marcos.

Wednesday, November 02, 2005

As I said we had a lot of choice. I couldn't resist sketching this guy too.

Noelle

Today we had a field day in our sketchbooks. Once we were kicked out of Daphnes. May I just say that if we had been talking they would not of kicked us out, after all we did buy our lunch there. Anyway we have found our new drawing spot on tuesdays. The main street produce market. What a gem!!! And our first victim.

Silver

We had quite a lot of potential characters to choose from this time. This lady turned out to be our first choice.
Noelle

No respect! Can you believe it, we got ourselves kicked out of the restaurant we normally eat at during our Sketchclub lunch. We weren't exactly eating anymore, and we were doing funny drawings of the patrons ... so that prompted the manager to politely ask us to leave. I remarked to the other Sketchclub executives (quietly, bravely ... while were out of ear shot of the manager) "I'll bet if we had just finished our food, and were talking instead of drawing the manager wouldn't have said a word to us."

Alas, that's the way it went down. But, the Silver lining is that we moved to a different eating establishment for some coffee, and we found a doozie of a place to draw! And, we found a funny "mark" for our memory sketch. So, in the end, it all worked out.

Enjoy.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome special Guest David Colman to Sketchclub. (Please note, there is no "e" in Colman.)

David had joined our Sketchclub lunches on several occasions, but this is the first time David has participated in a memory sketch. Here's a little good news/bad news: Good news is David has landed a job working for Cartoon Network ... Bad news is, he's no longer at Sony and won't be joining us for "our" Sketchclub lunches.

But, there is a silver lining for Sketchclub. David has promised to spread the Sketchclub francise into Cartoon Network. So ... if and when that happens ... we'll link up to it. Hopefully, we can set up a chain of Sketchclub franchises on every corner of the super-highway.

If you would like to see more of David's work, you can visit his blog at http://www.davidcolman.blogspot.com, or you can visit his newly updated website at http://www.davidsdoodles.com.

We spotted this guy as he hurriedly made his way across the Culver plaza. With his tiny feet, short legs, long torso, and a hurried pace, it gave him a funny walk. He looked so proper, he struck me like a cross between Merv Griffin and Mr. Bean.

I'm not sure if today's character actually was wearing glasses. What struck me is how intense he was while searching through his bag.

Noelle

Tuesday, October 25, 2005

We picked today's character as soon as we saw her. She walked determinedly towards us, giving us a good chance to look at her.

Noelle

So here is my recreation for today's character, being late somewhere?
Maybe.
-Marcos.

If you haven't noticed ... we have a new addition to our Sketchclub posting. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Noelle Triaureau!

Noelle is not new to Sketchclub, she's just new to posting on the blog, and we're hoping she becomes a Sketchclub posting regular. So ... that's where you come in. I'm hoping all of you will welcome Noelle with a comment or two about her sketch ... and about her web site. You have to make time and go to http://www.noelletriaureau.com, her paintings are incredible. I have linked her web site to the blog, but in case it takes a while to show up, you can just cut and paste this address.

Noelle is sharing her fabulous talents here at the Sony Pictures Animation studio.

About our subject ... what can I say. Stephen picked 'em, and we drew 'em.
--Marcelo

This character was easy to choose. I gave him a little book.

Noelle

This guy was the given before we even left the restaurant. He had just showed up as we were leaving.

Silver

Here's my version of today's character.
I see everybody seems to be wearing different lenghts of the same model of pants lately !
(just check up last week's "ticket guy"?)
-Marcos

Friday, October 14, 2005

For some reason I saw the guy as an action character ("some reason" being the commando-inspired outfit I guess).
This morning I wasn't sure what he was doing with the paperwork in his hands so I drew him like he was giving away some brochures or tickets (the boots and socks are accurate though...)
-Marcos.

We spotted this guy out in from on the Culver Cinema handing out free screening passes. This time, the Sketchclub executives had plenty of time to get this right .... we walked right up to this guy and talked to him about for a few seconds. The best part were the dark dress socks and shorts ... I guess that cinched the deal for us.

--Marcelo

This guy was marked from the second we walked out of Daphnies. We spotted him in the distance giving away tickets at the movie theater. So every step we took we were memorizing him. He is also the only subject to date that we interacted with. Marcelo had a brief conversation with him about what he was giving away.

Silver

Wednesday, October 12, 2005

Maybe it was the shirt, maybe it was the hair, but the Sketchclub executives spotted him right away. This guy had that "almost famous" look. Heck, we were inside the Sony lot ... and they are currently in production on several movies ... he might have been someone famous!

--Marcelo

Tuesday, October 11, 2005

Today there were quite a few subjects we came across. However, this guy stood out to us as we were about to walk through the Sony lot. He took a couple of steps and sat down on the curb as he engaged in conversation with someone. This is what I remembered.

Silver

Oh boy, we had trouble picking this mark. Not because he wasn't a great mark, but rather there were so many to choose from. There was a group of five kids, of which this guy was part of, and an old couple on a bench eating ice cream. Decisions ... decisions! Nonetheless, we settled on this guy, and boy was he fun to draw. I even tried to capture his peach-fuzz moustashe.

Of course the "real" backdrop was your standard Culver City background, but I added a graphitti backdrop because I thought it would look cool.

--Marcelo

Thursday, October 06, 2005

So, here's another character sharing the sidewalks of the City with us...!
-Marcos.

Wednesday, October 05, 2005

And you non-Californians think these people don't really exist ... but here's proof! We discovered her in the Sony Pictures backlot chatting with friends; right behind one of the old MGM sets for the 1938 classic Gone With the Wind. She had that California-Hollywood-type written all over her.

Here's my version of the leaning dude
Silver

I guess we'll never know what music he was listening to !
(Another interesting character in the way back from lunch...)
Marcos

When Stephen and I agreed that this was our mark, we had already passed this guy. So we asked Marcos if he wanted this guy as our mark, and if he had had a look at him. A distracted Marcos asked, "Who? Oh, you mean that guy we passed ... OK." Imagine that, Marcos is so good, he can memorize our mark ... after the fact. We all burst out laughing. And, make no mistake, Marcos nailed him in his memory sketch.
